Flat lay photography has been popular on Instagram for a couple of years now. Whether you realize it or not, you probably find yourself ‘liking’ stunningly captured flat-lays every time you scroll through Instagram. If you aren’t familiar with this technical term, flat-lays are the gorgeous photos of a collection of items from an aerial perspective trust us, you’ll recognize them when you see them. Flat-lays are extremely popular because they’re great at communicating a photographer’s mood, aesthetic, and personality all at once. It’s the easiest way to tell a story, showcase some of the items you own, or feature the mouth-watering meal you are about to eat. Flat lay photography can be done almost anywhere and is relatively easy to do. All you need is a flat surface, good lighting, a steady stool, a smartphone and you are good to go. To understand more about it IG Bhopal photography group has organised Flat lay session in association with Café Mojo Jojo.
Helped in creating good flat lay: Arun G. Pillai, Co-founder, Cafe Mojo Jojo
Sometimes you do not need quality materials to take good photographs. All you need is will, passion, and the ability to watch the world around you.We have organised this session here in our Cafe Mojojo. We have all the props and background arrangements that are needed for a perfect flat lay.The type of light emitted in this environment helps diffuse shadows and create good flat lays.
Lighting is everything : Sachin Joshi, Admin, IG Bhopal group
By choosing the right times of the day to take your photo and the right location, you’re half way set to capturing an amazing shot. My advice is to shoot during the early morning time or afternoon when the sun is low in the sky because you avoid getting shadows in the shot. Also, make sure to arrange your items next to a large window or a glass balcony for the best location.Lighting is the most important element for capturing the perfect shot, so stay clear of artificial lighting. You wouldn’t want to shoot on harsh lighting conditions. This would create shadows in your photo. Shadows are definitely a big no-no when it comes to shooting flat lay photos.
Simple surfaces
Having a simple background will make sure that items stand out in the image. Use a white polystyrene or wood panel as the flat surface for your picture. Darker backgrounds can work, but only if the objects in your flat lay are very bright.
Maintain the centre of the image
It’s easiest to take an image from the top corner. The main object in your picture should be in the centre. Make sure to hold your hand steady, and keep your phone completely flat with the scene you are shooting.
Find the right light
Lighting is key. You wouldn’t want to shoot on harsh lighting conditions. This would create shadows in your photo. Shadows are definitely a big no-no when it comes to shooting flat lay photos.
Use ‘Burst’ mode to get the perfect picture
An easy way to have multiple pictures to choose from is using the ‘Burst’ mode on your iPhone by holding the shutter button down.
Create balance
The next factor to consider is your composition, which refers to the items you will be capturing and how they will be arranged. As you choose your objects, consider the emotions you’re trying to express.
Set the scene
Once you’ve chosen the items that create a full look for the right background. Think of this as a backdrop for a product photo shoot, as the background works to further set the mood and complement your selections. Marble, hardwood floors, black and white tiles, and plain white are a few of the good options to go-to for the backdrops.
